FSAE has taught me more about engineering than any school’s curriculum ever could. The sense of community, hands-on, self-motivating nature of the program allows me to explore and create rather than follow a rubric. The cycle of analysis, design, refinement, validation, and execution is demonstrated repeatedly throughout our design process. This ensures individuals not only know “what”, but also “how” and “why”. It ensures students learn to work in a team, how to manage costs, consider reliability, manufacturability, and the interdependence of systems. This interdependence plays an additional role in seeing that all designers, regardless of major, naturally learn skills that fall outside their curriculum. We have a repository of references and information tailored for specific classes that provides a more thorough education and produces better real-world engineers as a result. This extends to one on one help with coursework, and seminars on topics like data analysis, CAD, CFD, etc. This daily gauntlet of learning sees members move on to amazing achievements in the industry, and I’m honored and eternally grateful that I get to be part of it.
